A shortened week on the PGA Tour gives way for the 2024 WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. The greenest show on grass may no longer be a signature event, but the WM Phoenix Open will still see some of the best players in the world. A pair of top-five players in the world, Viktor Hovland and Xander Schauffele, were among those in the field at the beginning, but they have since withdrawn in order to prepare for next week’s Genesis Invitational.
In their place Scottie Scheffler will go off as the heavy favorite to successfully defend his title. The world No. 1 is listed at +550 to win his third straight WM Phoenix Open and add his name to a small group of golfers who have accomplished this feat.
2024 Waste Management Open Odds
Odds as of February 6
Scheffler is joined in the field by a number of his American counterparts including Scottsdale residents Max Homa and Wyndham Clark. Both Ryder Cup members have had middling success at TPC Scottsdale and will hope the early season momentum rolls into this year’s event. Clark, the winner at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, aims to add another historic title to his mantle.
Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas find themselves in the field as well hoping a run of quality form and quality course history can lead them to the winner’s circle. Neither player has won since 2022, but that could all end this week in the desert. International stars Tom Kim, Sungjae Im, Min Woo Lee and Adam Scott round out the action.
2024 WM Phoenix Open Betting Picks
Scottie Scheffler To Win (+550): It has been nearly a full year since Scheffler has won on the PGA Tour and it is time for this skid to end.
The world No. 1 is the two-time defending champion and has continued to play great golf without being awarded. While it has been a slow start to his 2024, Scheffler has still commanded the 36-hole lead at the first two signature events, The Sentry and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He has fallen off the pace because of his putter, but the greens at TPC Scottsdale have proven to be to his liking in this past having gained over four strokes putting in his last three showings.
Over the last year, Scheffler ranks first in total strokes gained, first in strokes gained tee-to-green, first in strokes gained off the tee, first in strokes gained approach and first in strokes gained around the green.
Byeong Hun An To Win (+3000): An’s resurgence materialized in Hawaii with a pair of quality outings.
Finishing inside the top five at both The Sentry and the Sony Open, the South Korean should find his footing at TPC Scottsdale after a nice run. He is a perfect 5-for-5 making the cut at the WM Phoenix Open with a sixth-place finish in his debut and another top-10 effort in 2020.
Over the last six months, An ranks fifth in total strokes gained, fourth in driving distance, second in strokes gained off the tee and sixth in strokes gained tee-to-green. While he has not yet won on the PGA Tour, An has been close and the WM Phoenix Open has been kind to first timers in recent memory including Scheffler and Brooks Koepka.
Adam Hadwin To Win (+5000): Canadians have fared well in the desert with Nick Taylor contending in last year’s affair.
Hadwin more than has the makeup to follow in his footsteps as he arrives at the WM Phoenix Open once again. The 36-year-old has played some great golf this season, especially in the desert, with a sixth-place finish at The American Express and a runner-up finish at last fall’s Shriners Children’s Open. Those two golf courses could prove to be good corollary golf courses when given Hadwin’s success at all three in question.
He has made his last eight cuts at the WM Phoenix Open including in last year’s full field signature event. He notched a top-10 finish in this instance. He ranks 16th in total strokes gained over the last six months and is among the best putters in the field.
Adam Scott To Win (+5000): The Australian is quietly playing some fantastic golf dating back to last fall.
Scott has connected on five straight top-20 finishes with high finishes at the Bermuda Championship and the Australian Open. During this time, Scott has had the entirety of his game working in unison. Last week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Scott ranked sixth in strokes gained ball striking en route to his top-20 finish.
This is a continuing trend for the former Masters champion, and it could all come to fruition this week in Scottsdale. While he does not have the course history like other past winners, he has the current form and strong play on similar golf courses.
Si Woo Kim To Win (+6000): Kim is striking the ball brilliantly and is on a trend that has typically led to victory.
Making the cut in all four events this season, Kim has collected nice finishes at The American Express and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The South Korean gained nearly two strokes on approach on average in his two rounds at Pebble Beach last week and remains one of the most accurate drivers of the golf ball.
While he has not had a great time around TPC Scottsdale throughout his career, he has figured it out in recent years with back-to-back top-26 finishes. Over the last six months, Kim ranks 12th in strokes gained tee to green, 9thin strokes gained off the tee and 13th in strokes gained around the green.
