The 78th Golden Globe Awards are set for Sunday, February 28, to recognize brilliance in film and television in 2020 as voted on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
While their 93 members may decide the nominees’ fate, oddsmakers have also added their influence to the outcome by releasing Golden Globe odds for which movies, TV shows and actors will take home the top prizes.
This year’s gala is hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler and will have a virtual feel to it due to COVID-19. Each comedienne will play host on separate coasts of the United States to reduce travel for the nominees.
Speaking of nominees, “Nomadland” is the -180 favorite to win Best Motion Picture – Drama while “Hamilton” from Lin-Manuel Miranda is the fave over “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” for Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
In acting, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” has the favorite for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama with Chadwick Boseman as an enormous -850 fave, while Carey Mulligan in “Promising Young Women” is the -215 chalk for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama.
For comedy, Sacha Baron Cohen is the -300 fave to win Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his hilarious turn in “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” while his co-star, Maria Valkova, is -400 chalk to win Best Actress in that category.

What a difference a few weeks can make. After Sportsbook as the slight +150 favorite, Hamilton is now an overwhelming -200 favorite going into the Golden Globes. I’ve seen all of these movies over the past year and none got more play in my house than Hamilton. It’s been over five years since the play debuted on Broadway and after getting a digital release on the streaming platform Disney+, the media giant claimed it was the most streamed piece of content they had in 2020.
Although it’s a musical and it may not have the gut-busting laughs like the sequel to Borat or Palm Springs (another solid comedy), the fact remains none of these movies had the highs that Hamilton has as an overall production.
The latter obviously had some of the most memeable moments of 2020 but the shelf life on those laughs is short-lived. You see it once, you don’t need to watch it again. Hamilton is the type of movie you can rewatch and voters will likely reward Miranda for his brilliant efforts to meld American history with the progressive sound of hip hop and R&B.
Best TV Comedy Actor
Actor | Odds |
---|---|
Eugene Levy | -110 |
Jason Sudeikis | EVEN |
Ramy Youssef | +575 |
Nicholas Hoult | +1200 |
Don Cheadle | +1800 |
Odds as of February 26 at [Sportsbook not available for your region]
After Schitt’s Creek nearly swept the Emmys and brought a whole new audience to the comedic brilliance of Eugene Levy, the actor deserves to be the favorite for Best Actor in a TV Comedy at this juncture. But was it the best comedic performance on TV in 2020? I beg to differ.
That’s why I’m going with Jason Sudeikis in his starring role for “Ted Lasso.” His role as a former NCAA football coach-turned-soccer coach in the English Premier League was already a hilarious premise but his performance put a cherry on top of this amazing idea. Sudeikis has EVEN odds to win his first Golden Globe Award and with Levy at -110, it really is a subjective choice with the odds so close. If you take Levy, that’s understandable, but Sudeikis was a revelation in this new role across the pond.
Golden Globe Odds NOT To Bet On
Best TV Movie or Limited Series
Series | Odds |
---|---|
The Queen’s Gambit | -200 |
Unorthodox | +250 |
Small Axe | +600 |
The Undoing | +750 |
Normal People | +1000 |
Odds as of February 26 at [Sportsbook not available for your region]
If it weren’t for the fact that this is a limited series, “Queen’s Gambit” would likely be the odds-on favorite for Best TV Drama Series over “The Crown.” It was that good. Any show that can make the game of chess somehow interesting and engaging already has a leg up on the competition. It also helps that Anya Taylor-Joy was fantastic in the lead role.
This isn’t me saying not to bet on “Queen’s Gambit” at -200 but with such big odds, it doesn’t offer much value as an odds-on favorite if the Hollywood Foreign Press disagrees with my conclusion.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama
Actor | Odds |
---|---|
Chadwick Boseman | -850 |
Anthony Hopkins | +650 |
Riz Ahmed | +1100 |
Gary Oldman | +1600 |
Tahar Rahim | +3000 |
Odds as of February 26 at [Sportsbook not available for your region]
Write it down, take a picture and engrave the Golden Globe trophy now because Chadwick Boseman is all but a lock to win the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama award.
Sportsbook at -270 and now steamed to -850, Boseman is the fave over the likes of Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman and while all three were excellent in their roles, the tragedy of losing Boseman to cancer in 2020 is too hard to ignore when handicapping this prop.

While I was able to touch on four different awards and how to bet them, there are still 16 different categories available to bettors in Golden Globe odds. Take a look below and see which one stands out to you. The biggest piece of advice is don’t make picks this year solely on odds and really do your research on which movie/show/actor stood out.
