The PGA Tour returns to action this week after an up-and-down stint on the West Coast of the United States. Battling weather and a bevy of longshot winners, the PGA Tour turns to Mexico for the third playing of the 2024 Mexico Open at Vidanta.
Mexico Open Odds: Who Is Favored?
Odds as of February 21
The field will not be stacked like the Genesis Invitational or the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am as the world’s top players rest for the Florida Swing before major championship season begins. With the nature of this field wide open, anyone can win although defending champion, Tony Finau, will surely have a say by week’s end.
The world No. 24 finished runner-up to Jon Rahm in the first playing of this tournament in 2022 before exacting his revenge over the Spaniard last season on the way to the winner’s circle. Finauis the clear class of this field at +650 and looks for his first victory since this tournament last year when it was played in May.
Nicolai Hojgaard is the only other player to reside south of +2000 as he searches for his first victory on the PGA Tour. Emiliano Grillo, Stephan Jaeger and Thomas Detry are among those around +2500 who have been playing solid golf in the early stages of the 2024 PGA Tour season.
2024 Mexico Open at Vidanta Betting Picks
Nicolai Hojgaard To Win (+1400): The young Dane is playing some of the best golf in the world not only among those in the field this week at the Mexico Open. Hojgaard experienced a transcendent fall that included being a member of the winning European Ryder Cup team and winning the DP World Tour Championship – the equivalent of the Tour Championship on the DP World Tour.
He has since brought this quality across the pond in his first season as a PGA Tour member. Battling with Jaeger and Matthieu Pavon at the Farmers Insurance Open, the 22-year-old finished runner-up to the Frenchman due to heroics on the final hole. He should get right back on the horse this week as the par-71 layout is perfect for his game as he ranks second in total strokes gained, fifth in driving distance and top 20 in terms of strokes gained putting.
On a wide golf course where putting has proven to be crucial, Hojgaardshould once again find himself in the mix late into a tournament.
Davis Thompson To Win (+3500): The former Georgia Bulldog is more than good enough to win on the PGA Tour and the light field this week at Vidanata Vallarta may be all that is needed to get him over the edge. He possesses a nice blend of distance and accuracy off the tee and does not have a glaring weakness in his game.
Thompson ranks 11th in total strokes gained and 18th in strokes gained approach over the last half year and inside the top half of this field on the greens. He arrives having just played well at the WM Phoenix Open where he finished T-15 after finishing T-21 at The American Express. Thompson also finished T-15 at the World Wide Technology Championship this fall on a similar resort-style golf course featuring wide fairways and large greens.
Justin Suh To Win (+5000): Suh is a player that came out of college with the likes of Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland and Matthew Wolff and has taken a little more time to find his footing on the PGA Tour. He looks to be trending in the right direction after a solid showing at the WM Phoenix Open saw him gain on approach and on the greens as he normally does.
Long and straight off the tee, Suh will need those irons to continue to cooperate if he is to contend but given his recent history a solid gain in the prior tournament typically means more of the same is in store. The 26-year-old was among the contenders late at the World Wide Technology Championship ultimately finishing in solo fourth place. Suh should be able to learn from this experience as he let opportunities slip down the stretch.
Michael Kim To Win (+6500): This number appears a hair long for someone like Kim who is playing great golf at the moment. Over the last six months, the American ranks sixth in total strokes gained, eighth in strokes gained approach and inside the top 15 in strokes gained putting.
During this time, he has put contention runs into tournaments like the Wyndham Championship, The American Express, and even the Farmers Insurance Open before faltering over the weekend. A winner on the PGA Tour, Kim is returning to the form that led him to the winner’s circle all those years ago at the John Deere Classic and Vidanta Vallarta has the all the signs of being a perfect landing spot.
Chan Kim To Win (+12500): The string of longshot winners makes me inclined to throw a name north of +10000 on here and Kim looks to be that guy.
Twice a winner in the last six month on the Korn Ferry Tour, Kim has proven to have what it takes to not only win but go low. He hasn’t played since the Farmers Insurance Open where the South Course ate him up but a round of 66 arrived on the North. He finished inside the top 20 at the American Express and has the game to contend in this birdie-fest event. Over the last six months, he ranks fourth in this field in total strokes gained.
