Super Bowl 58 has wrapped up, leaving NFL fans and bettors buzzing from the action packed showdown. The game lived up to its billing, full of twists (fumbles galore), turns (blocked extra point) and heart-stopping moments (muffed punts) that will be talked about for years to come.
In a game that saw Patrick Mahomes and his Chiefs fight tooth and nail against a resilient 49ers squad, finally coming away with the victory in overtime, we’re here to provide a comprehensive betting recap of Super Bowl 58.
Super Bowl 58: Betting Outcomes
Moneyline
74% of the money and over 64% of bets were on Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs to win Super Bowl 58.
The public made out like bandits as Kansas City came out on top, cashing all the Chiefs +110 moneyline wagers. In just six NFL seasons as a starting quarterback, Mahomes has been to four Super Bowls and won three titles. His team has never finished with worse than an AFC Championship game appearance. He also owns an 83% playoff winning percentage, and trails only Tom Brady in playoff victories.
Kansas City is now 5-1 when trailing by double-digits in the postseason in the last five years. The rest of the NFL is 6-48 during that span. This your annual reminder, just bet on the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl and Mahomes to win MVP prior to the season. Since 2018, a $100 bet on the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl annually in the preseason, would have you up $1,900.
Result: Chiefs ML (+110)
Spread
Nearly 78% of bets were on the Chiefs to cover the two-point spread heading into Super Bowl 58.
Once again, sportsbooks have to be hurting this morning as Patrick Mahomes led both a game tying drive with time dwindling in the fourth quarter, and the game winning drive to cover the Super Bowl 58 spread. In doing so, Mahomes became the very first quarterback in the last thirty years to go eight-for-eight or better, with more than 27 rushing yards on any single drive, in the regular or postseason. He did it while orchestrating the game-winning drive in overtime of the Super Bowl.
Result: Chiefs +2 (-110)
Super Bowl 58 Total
65% of the money and 76% of bets were on the UNDER 47.5 in the leadup to Super Bowl 58.
The UNDER came through for bettors, but only just, as Patrick Mahomes' touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman ended festivities in overtime. No extra point was needed on the walkoff score. Intriguingly, the UNDER has now hit in five of the last six Super Bowls.
Result: UNDER 47.5 (-110)
Surprise Hits And Value Bets From Super Bowl 58
It wasn’t just the Kansas City players and Taylor Swift celebrating late into the Las Vegas night as Super Bowl Sunday drifted into Monday. Some of the best value prop bets of the big game hit on Sunday, and anyone lucky enough to be on them made some serious cash.
Non-QB Passing Touchdown: Yes (+3300)
Kyle Shanahan was cooking early. Former Tennessee high school quarterback (he was a more highly rated recruit than Sam Darnold), and current 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings threw a touchdown pass across the field to Christian McCaffrey on a trick play. The score stretched the 49ers lead to 10-0 with four minutes left in the second quarter and seemed to bring the crowd alive after a sloppy first-half.
Gatorade Color: Purple (+250)
Purple Gatorade was poured on Andy Reid as he made his way onto the field, cashing the color in back-to-back years. Many thought no Gatorade shower was about to cash at +1200 odds, until videos of the purple drink being poured on Reid surfaced.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling to score a touchdown (+500)
Kansas City’s much-maligned deep threat caught only 21 passes all year. But, he made a play when it mattered most. Valdes-Scantling hauled in a wide open touchdown near the end of the third quarter to give the Chiefs their first lead of the game.
Jauan Jennings to score a touchdown (+750)
After throwing for a score earlier in the game, Jauan Jennings powered his way into the endzone from six yards out early into the fourth quarter. In doing so, he became just the second player in Super Bowl history to both throw for and score a touchdown in the big game. Jennings made a miraculous leap up the Super Bowl MVP odds board during the game, at one point become the favorite at multiple sportsbooks. He was +40000 to win Super Bowl 58 MVP prior to kickoff, and was all the way down to +175 midway through the fourth quarter.
Will There Be Overtime: Yes (+850)
For only the second time in Super Bowl history, the big game went to overtime. Bettors were ecstatic to see Andy Reid opting to send Harrison Butker out to tie the game with six seconds left on the clock.
As you'll recall 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was also a part the first overtime in Super Bowl history. Back in Super Bowl 51, he was the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons when they raced out to a 28-3 lead over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. Brady led a miraculous comeback in the second half, and James White ran in the winning score in overtime.
Taylor Swift OVER 4.5 Appearances (-175)
This was the easiest Super Bowl exotic prop on the board. Swift was always going to be broadcast far and wide for an audience craving every last detail of her reaction to the big game. Dad's who bet on the Chiefs and their Swiftie daughters were able to share the jubilation of this bet hitting early in the fourth quarter when Swift made her fifth appearance on the broadcast.
Super Bowl MVP: Patrick Mahomes (+135)
Was there ever a doubt? I advised bettors to play Mahomes at +500 to win Super Bowl MVP before the AFC Championship game, and he didn’t disappoint.
Mahomes now has three rings, and three Super Bowl MVPs to his name. And he’s only 28 years old.
