USMNT Next Coach Odds: Nancy Favored While Klopp’s Long Odds Are Enticing

The US men's national soccer team fired head coach Gregg Berhalter on Thursday after crashing out of the Copa America in the Group Stage as hosts in embarrassing fashion. Who's next to coach the USMNT you ask? We have the next coach odds for the USMNT with Wilfried Nancy the favorite to take the position at +600.

Wilfried Nancy

Nancy has been in coaching for a short while but it didn't take him long to start building a trophy cabinet. In only his second season with the Columbus Crew, Nancy delivered an MLS Cup championship.

He's young (at 47) and coaches an attractive attacking style that's pleasing to the eye. his teams defend well and score a ton of goals. In 54 matches with Columbus, his club has amassed a ridiculous +43 goal differential.

His rise in the world of club football has been remarkable and quick. Leaving Columbus so shortly after arriving seems unlikely. Not to mention if he leaves it will certainly be for a European club job over a national team gig.

Javier Aguirre

Aguirre might have a solid resumé as an international manager, but delve a little deeper and it's not as glowing as you think. Sure, he's got a 63% win percentage with Mexico (twice), Japan and Egypt. But he's failed to take either of them past the Round of 16 in any major tournament. He might win a lot but not when it matters.

Steve Cherundolo

It's easy to see why the 45-year-old American is near the top of the list. His first job as head coach was his appointment as manager of LAFC in January of 2022. Since being hired his side has gone to back-to-back MLS Cup finals winning once. And it looks like his team could make yet another run to the finals in 2024. At the time of writing, LAFC has gone unbeaten in their last 10 games.

Much like Nancy, it seems unlikely that the US program can pry him from club management with his career on such a meteoric rise.

Jurgen Klopp Is The Dream Appointment

On the fourth of July, former Dortmund and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp Insta'd a message of fond memories of being in the US. A message that sent USMT fans into a frenzy. Klopp doesn't make the USMNT next coach odds top 10, he's still on the oddsboard at +2500.

As a Liverpool fan, I get why US fans want Klopp. He's got an infectious personality, he cares deeply for the program he represents and the players he coaches, and he wins — like a lot.

In stints with Dortmund and Liverpool, Klopp amassed a 59% win percentage across 810 games. He's won the Bundesliga title twice (runners-up twice) and the EPL title once (runners-up twice). The German has gone to three Champions League finals winning once.

Unlike some of the other names on the oddsboard (specifically near the top), Klopp's had a long career already. He left Liverpool because he was "spent". He couldn't keep up with the demands of club management any longer (he's been doing it for 20 years).

A less grueling national team gig could be exactly the type of job he's looking for.
